BEWARE OF YOUR TAP WATER
It has been estimated that as much as 75% of the
nation's water supply is contaminated by a parasite that can cause
bad cases of diarrhea. Cryptosporidium is a small microbe that is
found in public water systems that use surface waters (like Portland).
Unfortunately, contamination cannot be completely controlled by using
current treatment methods. Cryptosporidium has been the source of
several disease outbreaks and some deaths, including a major outbreak
in 1993 in Milwaukie where more than 100 people died.
Disinfectants, the predominant purifying treatment,
have little effect on cryptosporidium and new scientific data suggests
that some byproducts of disinfectants may cause chronic health effects.
Filtration is the most effective treatment to date against cryptosporidium.
I encourage you and your family to avoid this parasite by drinking
only filtered, bottled water.
