SLEEPING LESSONS
Unfortunately, many of us sabatoge the therapeutic
value of our chiropractic adjustments by going home at night only
to sleep with our heads cranked over to one side, sleeping on our
tummies, pulling one leg up more than the other, or not sleeping with
the proper support under our necks. In order to assure that you are
doing the most you can to assist your body in holding your adjustment,
it's crucial that you avoid sleeping on your stomach and that you
try to keep both knees bent pretty evenly when you sleep on your side.
Also beware of sleeping with a hand over shoulder level in any position
as that can lead to shoulder and neck trouble.
I highly recommend sleeping with a neck or "cervical"
pillow to support your neck and head in the ideal position during
the night. A cervical pillow is designed to support the natural curve
in your neck. Sometimes it takes a little getting used to, but once
you have experienced the benefits, that's the only pillow you'll ever
want to use!!
Not all cervical pillows are created equally and
they should be replaced about once every two to three years for best
results. We have a great brand at our office for small to medium-sized
men and women for only $32. Bigger folks may want to try a "buckwheat"-type
pillow (many stores carry these). You can form these pillows according
to your needs and they hold their shape quite well. Just make sure
that the shape you molded is an ideal one for your neck. Feel free
to ask me if you have any questions about this important topic!
