OSTEOPOROSIS

Many of my patients are interested in finding the best forms of calcium to take to prevent osteoporosis. The percentage of calcium absorbed into the body depends on what kind of form the calcium takes. For example, the calcium in "Tums" is only 5-10% absorbable. This means that if you need 1000 mg of calcium per day to prevent osteoporosis, you would need to take a whole bottle of "Tums " per day to get even close to what you need. The calcium in "Tums" is in metallic form, as are most forms of calcium unless otherwise noted.

You've been taking "Tums" for the last 5 years? Don't despair! There are two other forms of calcium. Calcium in chelated form is 40% absorbable. It has a negative charge placed on it to help the positively charged intestines absorb it. They usually come in pill form and in combination with magnesium. But since they're only 40% absorbable, you need to take about twice the recommended dosage on the bottle to get your 1000-1500mg per day.

The last variety of calcium is the colloidal form. It comes in a particle that is smaller than a red blood cell, so it is 98% absorbable. Colloidal minerals always are in liquid form and are a bit harder to find in your health food stores. They are also usually a bit more expensive until you consider that you're getting 98% of the calcium you thought you were getting as opposed to 40% or less from the calcium pills you were taking.

For your convenience, we have colloidal calcium and other minerals in our office. I believe so strongly that you will be healthier with these colloidal minerals that I let you buy it at my cost--$27. Our soil is so depleted of minerals in this country that it is very difficult to get your minerals from the foods you eat. Supplementation with colloidal minerals are the best way to get the daily dose of calcium and other minerals that you need to maintain a healthy body and to help prevent osteoporosis and other diseases caused by a mineral deficiency.
