ANTIBIOTICS
If you follow the news media, you may have become
aware of the warnings about the overuse of antibiotics. Antibiotics
are used to kill bacteria ( they are worthless for fighting viral
infections). They have saved countless lives that would normally have
been lost to post-surgical infections, pneumonia, tuberculosis, and
other bacterial infections.
But antibiotics have been over-prescribed and
have been fed in huge quantities to our livestock, rendering these
drugs less effective than they once were. In fact, it is widely believed
that there is a real danger of antibiotics not working at all sometime
in the near future. The bacteria are figuring out how to protect themselves
from these once powerful drugs. If you have been on antibiotics recently,
you may have noticed that it took two or three different antibiotics
before you got better. That's one of the warning signs!
If antibiotics do become ineffective, the results
will be catastrophic. Tens of thousands of people could be dying each
month from bacterial infections that were once easily treated. Scientists
are warning that this could happen within just a few years!!
It is up to all of us to boost our immune systems
so that we are far less likely to suffer from a bacterial infection
that might require antibiotics. The fewer antibiotics we use, the
longer they will be effective when we really do need them. Many bacterial
infections will get better on their own without the use of these drugs.
And, please, don't ask your medical doctor for an antibiotic if you
have a virus. It won't work anyway!
